Reporting a mistake
Mistakes come first, before everything else in the inbox. Please copy and paste the exact sentence you think is wrong, along with the page address and anything that proves it.
Our Corrections Policy explains exactly what we do next and how the fix appears on the page.
Sending us a story
We are looking for real things: documents, records, data, screenshots we can verify, or your own first-hand experience. We are not looking for rumours, and we will not publish something we cannot check ourselves.
A good tip tells us what happened, when, how you know, and what proof exists. Also tell us what you want. Are you happy to be named? Do you need to stay anonymous? We will respect it.
Read this before sending anything risky
If sending us a document could get you in trouble, stop and read this section first. Normal email is not private, and it shows people who you are.
- Do not use your work email or work computer. Your employer can usually read both. This is the most common way people get caught.
- Do not send us anything you are not allowed to have. We cannot advise you on that, and we will not ask you to take a legal risk for us.
- Ask us first. Email us from an account that is not linked to your real name and ask for a safer way to send things. We will set one up before you send anything sensitive.
- Clean your files. Documents, photos and PDFs secretly store your name, your device and sometimes your location. Removing your name from the text is not enough.
- Think about who else had it. If only three people could have seen a document, the document itself points at you, no matter how you sent it.
If you ask us to protect your identity, we will. But nobody can promise you legal protection, and any website that promises that is lying to you. If your situation is genuinely dangerous, speak to a lawyer first.
If we wrote about you
If you are named in an article and think it is wrong or unfair, email us with Correction in the subject. You can ask for a right of reply, and we may publish your response even if we still stand by the article. The details are in our Corrections Policy.
Your personal data
To ask what data we hold, or to have it deleted, email us with Privacy in the subject. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, which is very little.
Things we cannot help with
We are a website that explains things. We are not a service. To save your time, we cannot:
- Give you dark web links or addresses. We do not have them and would not share them.
- Get your hacked account back, delete something from another website, or find a person for you.
- Help during a live hack or virus attack. Contact a professional or your country cyber security agency.
- Give legal advice, or tell you if something is legal where you live.
- Help with anything illegal. Those emails get deleted.
If you are in danger right now, call your local emergency number. If you have been scammed or hacked, report it to your country official reporting service. In the US that is the FBI IC3, and most countries have something similar.

About reply times, honestly
This is a small, independent site run by one person. We aim to answer corrections within two working days and other emails within a week. Story tips are always read, but we cannot reply to all of them.
If you have waited more than two weeks and it matters, please send it again. It is far more likely we missed it than ignored it.
